Caption: | The 'Baobab' Adansonia genus was first described by the French naturalist and explorer Michel Adanson (1727-1806)'. There are 9 species in the group: only 2 of which are native to mainland Africa; 1 native to Australia; and the other 6 all native to Madagascar. They are known for their ability to withstand drought - large specimens being able to store to 100,000 litres of water in their trunks - and for their exceptional longevity. One specimen in South Africa has been radiocarbon dated to an age of 1,275 years. |
