This is a series of panoramic landscapes featuring the headwaters of the Kafue River at Chimfunshi, ‘The Place of Water’.
The Kafue River and its headwaters are not just beautiful, they are also exceptionally important to Zambia and its people. The Kafue River, some 1600km long, is the life source for over 50% of Zambia's population; it supplies most of the country's industry, mining and agriculture; and much of the country's hydro-electric power system relies on it. More information on the Kafue River is noted under each of the photographs, when viewed at large size.
Chimfunshi is well known for its world-renowned chimpanzee sanctuary, where threatened and abused chimpanzees from all over the world are given a home in large open forest areas. Providing a refuge for chimpanzees has long been Chimfunshi’s main focus but the project is now being extended and developed to include environment & nature conservation, research, education and community components. Adjacent land has been acquired which increases the total project & conservation area to almost 10,000Ha, almost all of which is pristine Miombo Woodland, extensive wetland ‘dambos’, long river frontages and expansive river flood plains.
Plans are now being put in place to develop and promote Chimfunshi as a nature & environment reserve. With the necessary support, Chimfunshi will take its rightful place as one of Africa's important nature conservances and eco-travel destinations.
