Title: | LZmMut_83 - Miombo Woodland from above, Muchinga Escarpment, N Zambia. |
Caption: | Another scene looking down, from the cliff-side of a granite inselberg, onto the canopy of the Miombo Woodland far below. The Miombo Woodland is the forest type of the Central African Plateau, covering an area of over 2 million sq km. Described as a 'dry rain forest', it provides local populations with a rich harvest of natural materials: including building materials and fuel wood; various materials used to make household goods, furniture and implements; wild edible mushrooms; edible orchids and other edible plants; edible insects; and a wide array of medicinal plants and traditional treatments. As a result, regionally, the Miombo supports directly and entirely over 40 million poor rural people and several millions more people who trade its products to the towns. The Miombo Woodland is perhaps the region's most important natural resource - but one that is largely unappreciated, much-abused and fast-disappearing. |
