Title: | LZmCb.20 - Sunrise, Kafue Headwaters, NW Zambia |
Caption: | The Kafue River rises in NW Zambia some 120km from the town of Chingola, close to the border with DR Congo and in the heart of the Central African Copperbelt. It is the longest fully-Zambian river at some 1600km and is the third largest tributary of the Zambezi (after the Luangwa and the Shire Rivers). It discharges some 10 cubic km of water into the Zambezi annually. In addition, over 50% of Zambia's population live within the Kafue River basin. Its course takes it through the mining area of the Zambian Copperbelt; the important wetland area of Lukanga Swamps; the Kafue National Park nature & wildlife reserve; the Itezhi-Tezhi gap and reservoir site; the Kafue Flats wetlands and their national parks and agricultural areas; and the Kafue Gorge and its dam, power generation and reservoir installations. Arguably, these factors combine to make the Kafue Zambia's most economically and environmentally important river. Despite this, the river itself, its sustainable use, and the huge downstream populations which depend on it, are seriously threatened by mining pollution and many other abuses. As with all major rivers, the protection and conservation of the headwaters, such as these pictured here, are of particular importance. |
