Title: | LZmMut_224 - Miombo Woodland in New Leaf, Muchinga Escarpment, N Zambia. |
Caption: | The Miombo Woodland is the forest type of the Central African Plateau, covering an area of over 2 million sq km. Described as a 'dry rain forest', it provides local populations with a rich harvest of natural materials: including building materials and fuel wood; various materials used to make household goods, furniture and implements; wild edible mushrooms; edible orchids and other edible plants; edible insects; and a wide array of medicinal plants and traditional treatments. As a result, regionally, the Miombo supports directly and entirely over 40 million poor rural people and several millions more people who trade its products to the towns. The heat of the late dry season brings on the emergence of the new leaf in the Miombo - one of the region's most beautiful and dramatic, but little known, 'nature spectaculars'. The leaf colours change spectacularly from bright crimson red, through shades of orange, brown, yellow, light green, and eventually to tree-green. And all this in the space of just a few weeks. The colours arise as a result of powerful toxins produced by the trees to protect their new shoots and leaves from insects. A 'must-see' for all lovers of Nature and the outdoors. The Miombo Woodland is perhaps the region's most important natural resource - but one that is largely unappreciated, much-abused and fast-disappearing. |
