| Caption: | The Bangweulu has a fascinating history: The missionary & explorer David Livingstone explored the lake and swamps extensively. He was the first European to see the lake during his first expedition. He returned to the Bangweulu in his final expedition, when he faced immense difficulties and hardships trying navigate this inaccessible area to establish which rivers formed and drained the lake. This expedition ended with his death in 1873 at Chief Chitambo's village, situated at the southern end of the Bangweulu flood plain, where the Livingstone Memorial can still be seen. The colonial tyrant King Leopold II of Belgium wanted easy access from the Belgian Congo to the Bangweulu area due to its rich hunting and fishing resources and this resulted in the "Congo Pedicle" being mapped in border treaties with the British-held Northern Rhodesia. The Congo Pedicle is the "leg" of Congo that extends eastwards to partially split current day Zambia - it was also referred to as "La botte du Katanga" (Katanga's boot). The pedicle was intended to be a land corridor from the Katanga area of Leopold's Congo Free State which would access the Bangweulu region and its game and fish resources. But in practice, the pedicle did not extend far enough into Northern Rhodesia land to achieve that aim, and so was something of a cartographic blunder. |
