Title: | LZmE_0409-25.3BW - 'Mother of Nyuma' Baobab, Mukutu Mountains, Luangwa Valley, NE Zambia |
Caption: | 'Nanyuma' - The Story of the Mother of Nyuma Baobab 'Nanyuma', (The Mother of Nyuma) is the name given to this unhappy-looking baobab near the beautifully named village of Dungulungu. This village is located at the foot of the remote Mukutu Mountains in NE Zambia, in the shadow of a dramatic and windswept mountain called 'Mpala Usenga' (The Tallest One). The story is that, in the early 1960s, members of the Lumpa Church rampaged through the area trying to force villagers to join their sect, as it came under increased pressure and persecution by UNIP, Kenneth Kaunda's political party. This led to the killing of the village headman. Some villagers fled and hid inside this tree. Whilst they were in hiding, one of the young women gave birth to a child called Nyuma. Ever since, the tree has been 'Nanyuma - The Mother of Nyuma'. |
